    Hey Linda B,

The Walnut tree will have a root base that goes 24" (80% of the roots) deep as wide as the drip ring of the tree, more in some areas, less in others. Some 20% of the roots will go deeper to water.

By having a garden in the area that this tree uses to get it's nutrients would be to damage an area of it's root growth. On top of that damage, now you want to change the pH of the soil, or some other components. So, you need to be sure what pH the tree likes, and that your garden plants like that pH as well. If you fertilize, the tree will absorb that fertilizer too, so it needs to be compatible with the tree.

Generally, it is best to let the area of a tree be just that, and try to find an area not under this tree for your garden. If you want to keep the tree and the nuts in a healthy state, you probably should not 'change the soil'.
